Ready for Quinsig

We're heading to Lake Quinsigamond tomorrow morning to race against Smith College and Mount Holyoke. The racing will begin at 8:20 and be finished by 9:40 AM. The river conditions have made rowing incredibly challenging in East Hartford with the Connecticut River being extremely high due to snow melt up north and some rain in the vicinity.

Now that we're finally approaching racing on a buoyed course it should be a blast to see how well we can execute our plan!

I look forward to seeing Friends of the program at the lake. We'll be boating out of the Donahue Rowing Center.

Spring has sprung

Fantastic Tour de Gym in Fitness I today - eight students doing a combination of squats, burpees, rowing, jump rope, box jumps, thrusters, and some other exercises that were, on the whole, incredibly challenging. I hope that they surprised themselves in their ability to push through and manage their effort the second time we did the workout.

Today we're back on the flooded river trying to be as efficient as possible in preparation for Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Holy Cross. Both Smith and Holyoke are ranked highly within the region and it should be a good test of our developing speed on all the levels of our program. It will also be our first visit to Lake Quinsigamond since last year's New England Championships.

Focus for today: Allowing intensity to flow continuously and understanding that balance point between the technical and incredible intensity. Finally a beautiful day as well - 61 degrees and sunny!

Final Saturday Race Bulletin: NOTE CHANGES

Racing Schedule for tomorrow:

8:30 Women's Varsity 8

8:45 Men's Varsity 8

10:30 Women's 2V8

Parents must park at Robertson School – 227 Cross St. in Coventry, CT

Follow directions to the boathouse, http://www.uconnhuskies.com/AllStories/WRowing/2004/04/07/20040407.html , then proceed past the boathouse for .4 miles. The school will be on your left.

Park in UPPER lot – this is important as we want to be considerate of townspeople who are using the school tomorrow morning.

To access the upper lot, enter the 2nd driveway (just past the main school building) and drive through the lower lot. You will then walk down to the lower lot where the bus will be waiting.

Our bus will pick people up at 8 and 9 AM. We will drop people off after the races are finished.

The school is .4 miles from the boathouse. Feel free to walk to the venue.

Please do not park on the road nor at the regatta site. UConn has to apply for a regatta permit from the DEP which stipulates only a certain number of vehicles in the launch site. That number is met with the buses and trailers.

There will not be a tent or cooking on site as well. So any munchies will have to put onto the bus or in the cab of the truck if it is raining. The area around the site is muddy so please bring boots and rain gear. We will be returning to the boathouse to off load if you care to pick up your child there after the unload please do so. If you can not make the event but will be in Hartford in the pm you can come to the boathouse to see a taped delayed broadcast of the racing on the big screen at 12:30. The one proviso is if it is raining we will likely not expose the cameras to the elements.

BREAKING NEWS: Saturday Race Schedule

Saturday's racing will occur at Coventry Lake between the hours of 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The US Coast Guard Academy and University of Connecticut will race on the women's side while only the USCGA will race the Trinity men. Many thanks to Coach Jen Sanford-Wendry for her generous offer to host the two teams this weekend. With flooded conditions in the southern New England region there are plenty of challenges to continue to develop team speed.

US Coast Guard Race Change of Venue

We are still in discussions with the Coast Guard Academy Athletic Department and the UConn Operations department about potential race venues. After investigating all of the options we are still working out the details. Here are some things we do know:

1. Coast Guard will be extremely busy with other athletic events and spectators will be limited. Security will also be very tight.

2. UConn's Coventry Lake area is not spectator friendly and with the potential for increased numbers of athletes they have asked that spectators not attend. This is a DEP issue and not a UConn issue.

3. Sunday racing for Trinity versus Coast Guard is a possibility if necessary and we will have to make the necessary adjustments.

Status changes will be emailed and posted here and on www.trinityrowing.org first thing in the morning.

Thank you again for your patience - and I have to say that I was FIRED UP by the workout that I saw the novices doing today...going at it hard and cheering each other on is great to see!

Potential Coast Guard Race Site Change

With unexpected flooding of the river the race site for Saturday's contest between Coast Guard and Trinity is in question. We are investigating with Jen Sanford-Wendry at UConn and with Steve Hargis at Coast Guard as to whether we can row on Coventry Lake or in New London on the Thames River.

We will do our best to keep all parents, friends, and alumni apprised of the situation - please look for updates throughout the day on both this site and www.trinityrowing.org.

Thank you for your flexibility and patience!

Baseball Season, Wind, and Winded

It was awesome to see some baseball yesterday and got to thinking about what an incredible grind it will be for those players to play 162 games over the coming months. The level of concentration, intensity, and physicality is difficult to comprehend especially when one considers that games in April count just as much as games in September. The only difference is that the mentality of the teams is that there is STILL TIME to improve and makes changes and move up the standings. In a lot of ways, this is what rowing teams face in the early season when the weather is poor and championship racing seems far away.

Also did a brutal quartet today that still has me seeing stars and wheezing - 5 x XX ring push ups, double unders, box jumps, and deadlifts. Finished off with some inversions (headstand, shoulder stand, and then some navasana). I feel much more centered and able to focus on the task at hand today.
